Can a guy wear a boutonniere with a button up shirt?

For Homecoming my bf is wearing a button up shirt. Can he wear a boutonniere with it? boutonniere: is a flower that attaches to the jacket.

He reeeeeeeeeeeally shouldn't. I've been to several dances before, even if homecoming dance is formal, no guy should ever wear a boutonniere with a button-up shirt, it looks really weird, they are for tuxes, and tuxes only. If you don't believe me google image it! Here, I made it easy for you:
